I am new to this and still learning. Does algae only get caught in the filter when it is dead because the process somehow makes it larger, or does dead and live algae both get caught, but the live algae multiples so fast that it is impossible for the filter to catch all of it? I suspect the latter. I just want to be sure.

You got it. Both dead and live algae gets caught in the filter. At any given moment most of the water is in the pool, where the live algae is reproducing like crazy. The filter isn't going to catch enough to even slow it down.
