Is there something else I can put into the skimmer that will work just as well but cost less?

We don't recommend the exclusive use of sticks or pucks here at TFP because they are always adding other chemicals to the water.

I would also like to recommend to you, the ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry.
We take a hands on approach here at TFP when it comes to dosing our pools, unless a SWG is in use, but still, the water is being tested daily even with a SWG.
If you are more interested in not having to dose your pool daily, I would suggest you look into a SWG.
