So am using 128oz jugs of 5.25% bleach from local hardware, $2.50 per jug

InTheSwim has one pound bottles of Instant Liquid Chlorine (a powder) for $5 per

would be fun to have fewer empty bleach bottles to recycle

would Instant Liquid Chlorine be Ok alternative?

More smoke, mirrors, and misdirection. You can see the manual/info sheet here, and its 73% Cal-Hypo.

That is cal-hypo which will increase your CH which could lead to calcium scaling.

All solid forms of chlorine adds something that stays in the pool after the chorine is used up.
