Proper water level?

We've had a lot of rain lately - a few inches - and it's raining now. I usually keep the water level about an inch below the top of the skimmer (I think I read that somewhere), but when my pump kicks on in about two hours, the water level will be over the top of the skimmer because of the rain. Is it okay to run the pump like this for the night? I don't want to go out there in the pouring rain to drain water through the backflush valve.

My pool overflowed a couple of years ago when we got 10 inches of rain in 5 hours. The equipment was fine. The skimmer won't really "skim" the water properly but it will still filter. That was my experience anyway. That was in 2004 or 05 and was unaffected by the overflow.
