Chemistry Questions

We're new to pools and trying to figure out Chemistry. My wife has a PhD in a related area and is confused about how some of the chemicals dissappear.

For instance, we are adding sodium hypochlorite (bleach) to the pool. NaOCl. It's dissociated, the Cl- is used to disinfect and becomes a gas which then gets out into the atmosphere. Oxygen can form a gas, so we'll assume it heads off into the sky. How does the sodium get out of the pool? If you have the same water in the pool for months or years on end, will you reach saturation levels of Na+ in the water?

Na and Cl accumulate in the water over time, effectively adding salt to the water. The salt level does buildup a little, typically to around 1,000, though in some cases to perhaps 2,000. There is almost invariably enough water replacement to keep it from getting higher than that.

Active chlorine is HOCl.

There is way more information here.
