Hi,
New pool owner here...bought a house with a pool that is about 9 years old.
In ground pool
Vinyl liner
100000 litres approx
Sand filter
Located in Ontario, Canada (pool is closed for winter obviously)
I have the TF-100 test kit

CYA is about 35 (hard to tell but roughly)
TA is 130
PH is 7.5 after putting a bit over a litre of muriatic acid in the pool 2 days ago. My PH tends to climb which will lead to a question about aeration later
TC is drops down to 0.5 24 hours after putting in 2.5L of 10% chlorine...a few hours after the chlorine is added and next morning still it's usually >4

So my questions are:
- I need to lower my TA. I bought this kit: http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B003SR2A82/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
However, I have no idea how to install it as it hasn't arrived yet...Do I unscrew the existing return jet or does it install somehow over the existing one? Can I do this while there is water covering it or do I have to empty the pool (I hope not)

- Is it normal for my chlorine to drop down to 0.5 24 hours after putting in the 2.5 litres (the pool calculator suggests this)? I have the pump running about 10 hours a day during the day

Thanks so much in advance!

Is your pH drifting? Because if it isn't, I wouldn't worry about it. Why do you want to lower it? If everything is stable, don't break it.

You are going to lose anywhere from 3-5ppm a day. it all depends on the pool, weather, location, trees, bather load ext...

Thanks for the reply.
Yeah...after a week or less, the PH is up to 7.8 or more...however, it's hard to tell as we opened the pool late because of the long winter so perhaps I just don't have enough time to tell yet...the pool is filled with well water which is very basic

Should I be increasing my CYA? I read people putting chlorine in every few days and I'm jealous...
However, I will say my pool is crystal clear.

Hi,

So strangely enough my chlorine readings are holding steady....I am getting away with adding a couple of litres every couple of days.
Did the FAS-DPD test today and my CC is zero. My FC was 3 today

Back to my PH problem...my PH rises continually as I have a high alkalinity level (130). PH is now about 7.9...I add acid but it creeps up.
If anyone can help me on how to use this: http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B003...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
My return jet looks something like : http://lghttp.18355.nexcesscdn.net/...for_vinyl_liner_fiberglass_-_white_sp1408.jpg

Thanks.

So, I guess you did not like my suggestions from 3 days ago which would have definitely told you what is going on in the water.

Keep the FC above 3ppm at ALL times and you might be fine.

Rising pH is pretty normal, add acid as needed. Can't look at your first link down here.

Hello,
I was going to do the test overnight but before I could, the chlorine levels seemed to stabilize. Thanks for that tip though as it will be useful for the future I'm sure.

I've been adding acid...I guess I didn't think I'd be adding it weekly but muriatic acid is much cheaper than the pool stores "low n slow" or whatever they call it....

The link for the Hayward aerator is here... hope this works better: http://www.amazon.ca/Hayward-SP1431...3831170&sr=8-2-spell&keywords=hawward+spa+jet

Thanks!
