adding Borax thru the skimmer on recirculate

is it ok to add borax directly thru the skimmer bypassing the filter into the pool? mechanically i don't see it being very different from adding slurry in front of the returns. chemically it exposes the pump to higher PH. not sure if it's bad for the pump or not. any thoughts?

Why not just add it to the pool water?

We recommend adding by pre-dissolving and pouring in front of a return jet.

The only real risk from borax in particular is that it can cause local metal staining, due to locally high PH before it has mixed in, but only in rare cases. Pre-dissolving and pouring in front of a return is the fastest way to get it to mix into the bulk pool water, thus avoiding any risk.
