Return jet replacement

I have a return jet that has a crack in the flow portion of the jet. It is bent upwards and causes a break in the water. The plastic portion of the jet has a crack the length of it and has folded in on itself. I want to replace the jet but I'm afraid I may crack something. I've tried unscrewing it by hand but of course, I can't get it off. I'm leery about putting a tool on it to get it off but I feel that's about all I can do at this point. I have a pair of pliers that would work and even a tool that I can "screw" into the jet then back the jet out. What do you guys recommend I do?

A typical return jet comes off fairly easily with a strap wrench. There are some non-standard ones where that won't work. If in doubt, please post a picture so we can give more specific suggestions.
