Replacing a lateral assembly on a Hayward 244s Sand Filter

I am looking for some help. I am trying to replace the lateral assembly on an old Hayward 244s side mount sand filter, it is not the umbrella style. I can not get the assembly off the lower elbow. Is there a trick to removing this or do I need to remove the whole lower elbow and lateral assembly. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I've never seen one, but it looks like you have to unscrew that elbow piece from the tank itself.
