We keep getting a lot of debris in the pool even with the intex cover. Will covering it with a tarp have a big affect on the water?

If you only cover the pool at night it will help in a couple of ways. You will get less debris in the pool and the water will be warmer than if you left it uncovered. There won't be any significant effect on the chemistry unless you leave it covered for an entire week or more.
