Pool/Spa Automation Recommendation - possible DIY

Hi TFP Community!

I have a Compool 2000 (very old system) that is now starting to give issues. I'm in need of some recommendations on a replacement system and whether it's something I could tackle on my own or not. Someone recommended the aqualink/iaqualink system which sounded interesting allowing me to control from a smartphone. Here's my setup that I think is relevant to the system:

main pump (single speed) - probable upgrade to variable speed in future
booster pump
valve to control flow to pool or spa
1 light in pool
1 light in spa
waterfall pump - currently out of service
spa air blower - also currently out of service
solar/gas heater valve - currently broken, I just manually turn it - not terribly important to auto control

The answer probably depends on what you want the system to do, what your budget is and how handy you are.
