Rinse setting - Multi Port Valve

What is the purpose of the "rinse" setting of my Hayward Multiport Valve?

Water exits the Waste port, but what is the difference between the "Rinse" and "Waste" positions?

Waste sends water directly to the waste line without passing through the filter. Rinse sends water through the filter just like during filtration, but the output goes to the waste line. Backwashing runs water through the filter backwards to the waste line.

Since backwashing uses the filter backwards, after backwashing there may be some dirt and debris trapped on the outlet side of the filter (which was the inlet while backwashing), so you rinse after backwashing to clear that stuff out and to resettle the sand.
