Ok..more then likely a dumb newbie question, but here goes.

In the summer, once pool is hot enough, and one rarely turns on the solar panels, will not the water in them overheat and cause major expansion? Should they be drained?

All your info on this would be great.

Solar panels normally drain automatically when they are turned off. There is typically a vacuum breaker valve at the top of the system that lets air in when the pump is no longer pushing water up to the panels. Normally the return to the pool is always open, so even if the vacuum breaker failed there is no way for pressure to build up.
