Creative coping expansion joint

I've seen a few pictures of pools that have a thin channel of pebbles surrounding the coping, like this:

If you do that, does the pebble channel serve as the expansion joint? I would love to not have the ugly caulk expansion joint in our new pool.

That pool was built by pool environments - great company. Yes, the pebbles serve as the expansion joints on this build. Great artistic way to solve the ugly expansion joint issue
