newbie with pump strainer question

Hi everyone,

I have a brand new 21' AG pool with a 2 speed Hayward 1 HP pump. This afternoon I vacuumed the pool, cleaned the skimmer basket, and finally the pump basket. When I fired the pump back on, I noticed dirt coming from the return. It only lasted a few seconds and then went to clear water.

I'm not too concerned as I believe I need to backwash the filter, but what would cause this? I've never noticed this before, and it seemed to happen right after I cleaned the pump basket. Could the two be related somehow? All equipment is about a month old.

That is normal for a DE filter. With a sand filter it suggests that the sand might be channeled. That would be very unusual for a cartridge filter unless the cartridge was just removed/replaced.
