what type of sand to use??

hey guys and gals,
today a friend of mine was saying that he was going to replace his filtering sand with playground sand (from the depot).
i know nothing about sand filters (i have a cartridges), and i was wondering if this was a bad idea... any thoughts?

As far as I'm concerned it is. Sandbox sand and pool filter sand are two different things. If he is trying to save some money, he is saving it in the wrong area.

Of course.... If he is not a close friend, let him go ahead.
