I just deep cleaned my Triton ii sand filter. I saw in the triton manual that the "freeboard" space (area above sand to top of filter) should be 11 and 1/4". If the freeboard space is 15 and 1/4", can I add 4" of new sand on top of the old sand? Should i try to stir it or mix the new sand in with the old sand?

No problem to add new sand on top ... I would not try to mix it or you might risk disturbing the laterals.
