Sand Filter issue

When I move from filter to the backwash I lose pressure in the filter trap. Why would this be happening?

"filter trap"? I'm not sure what you are referring to.

Do you mean in the pump strainer basket in front of the pump?

On my sand filter, when I set it on backwash or waste, it creates a suction through the pump and skimmer even if the pump isn't on. I believe this is normal operation. If the valve isn't diverting properly, you may have an issue with the spider gasket. More details on the problem would Def help diagnose it better.

Yes in the strainer basket. Does it matter that I'm not using the chlorinator and water is still moving through it? Or is this likely a sign of faulty equipment like something needs replaced?

The chlorinator shouldn't make any difference.

I also suspect it might be the spider gasket, as Adamsudio suggested.

I've also noticed a drop in pressure consistently showing 10 psi less than normal. Where is the spider gasket located?

The valve you move to take the filter to backwash. The spider gasket is under the cover of the valve that diverts the water.
