Interesting. Can anyone explain why reversing the polarity does this, and if it's a good idea?

Yes what he did in the video works to descale the electrodes. But, if those electrodes are made of different metals, you should switch it back as soon as it's done.
You might, every second or third tome go ahead and acid wash after. There will be some scale remaining each time.

I would be real interested to see what his test results say. He seems to develop scale pretty quickly.
Our circupool si-45s are self cleaning, so I will would guess that's the same process automatically going on with ours. Only we can't see it happening.
Guessing here, but I'd bet the better brands of SWG aren't sending straight DC to the electrodes. Probably PWM (pulse width modulation) and switching polarity after a set amount of time.

The Hayward SWG also automatically switch polarity every time it starts to generate.
My Intellichlor switches polarity for self cleaning, I believe the manual says every 4 hours. Even so, the book also says to remove and clean every 3 months I think it is.
I think "self cleaning" is one of those features that is working its way down the product lines for SWG's even the little cheap Saltron Mini have in my hot tub has automatic polarity reversal self cleaning.
