Quantity of sand in Hayward S244T filter

I just changed the sand in my filter which calls for 300 lbs. I ran into our local pool guy at Home Depot and told him what I was doing. He told me to just put 250 lbs in. I wish I had asked him why but I was in a hurry. Is this a good idea or should I add the other 50 lbs?

I would use the amount specified in the manual.
