I saw a booster pump next to the main pump but never used it for 4 years living here. Not sure what is it for? Please educate me.

It is used only if you have an auto-cleaner that requires a booster pump. Perhaps that cleaner is long gone?

If you don't have a pressure cleaner you might consider a robot cleaner. I don't see details about your setup, so you might add that to your signature so we can make suggestions or help with problems more easily.

There should be a return in your pool that is is plumbed too. Fire up the pump and see which one. That's the one the vacuum goes on. Polaris 280's are popular and require a booster pump.
This rig has an (unused) booster - it also has an open/shut ball valve on a 1" PVC line - that valve is for the booster.
Why someone thought they needed to both turn off the booster AND close the line, I don't even WANT to know, but there it is.
After the valve, it goes to a female threaded (1 1/2" NPT) fitting on the wall.
In this install, it is the only return with a threaded fitting.
If you have a small-diameter valve, check it when testing a the booster.
