How much chlorine does it take to ruin a PVC elbow connection?

Someone added trichlor tabs to the trough of the negative edge. The negative edge goes to a surge tank. The negative edge system runs 24 hours a day.

The pool builder is claiming that the trichlor tabs ruined one of his PVC elbow joints.

My gut says it wasn't the chlorine that caused the issue, rather the drop in pH the trichlor caused.

Muriatic Acid is Hydrochloric Acid, 35%.

Is appears that PVC has "Good" chemical resistance to even straight muriatic acid.

Saltwater Chlorine Generators pump chlorine through plumbing, although trichlor tabs are acidic.

It appears that PVC has "Excellent" chemical resistance to chlorine.

No amount of trichlor is going to damage PVC chemically. PVC is impressively chemical resistant. Trichlor tablet feeders are made out of PVC, and when they have problems it is not because the PVC components are damaged.

My guess is that if the joint failed, then the joint was probably not glued correctly.

I would ask to see the failed joint. The cause of the failure will probably be obvious if you are familiar with glue joints.

If you can post a picture of the failed joint, we might be able to determine what the cause of the failure was.
