Pool leak?

I'm currently losing about an inch of water every 8 -10 hours. Trying to determine if the loss is due to evaporation (pool water temp 49 degrees, ambient air temp anywhere from 25 to 45 degrees) or if I have a leak. No visable wet spots anywhere around the pool or at the equipment slab.

Any suggestions?

Anything much over 1/4" in a 24 hour period is not evaporation. You have a significant leak.

when I was losing that much, main drain connection in the skimmer - no tell tail sign of leak. I had two holes in skimmer one to pump, one to main drain. Can cover hole or let water line drop past the skimmer.

Don't you put likea bucket with water on a step and then see if it goes down at the same rate fora leak?

Yup. We call it the bucket test. Ideally you want the bucket to be nearly full and at the same level as the pool.
