Joining union and PVC pipe

I'll be using these as unions on my pool pump. Do I need some sport of special glue to join this union (which is ABS) to a PVC pipe?

Not particulalry special, byt you need a multipurpose solvent. It will probably be labelled "PVC, ABS and CPVC" clearly on the can.

John is correct. You need ABS compatible primer. Don't use regular primer on ABS.
