High Pump Pressure

This is my first winter with my pool up and running. It seems over the last couple of months my pump pressure has increased from around 20-21 to about 40. I did a backwash which in the past has always returned it to the 20-21 range. The pressure remains at 40. What can this be caused by and what is the solution.

Does the pressure gauge go to zero when you turn the pump off?

Sounds like a bad gauge. 40 is near impossible to get.

Checked the gauge and it seems to be stuck at 18 so that explains the high pressure. Thanks for the replies.

Get a liquid filled gauge. They last much longer.
