Advice on installing pump

Hello Everybody,

I am working on a pool; the pump is not working -- when I start this it does some noise and then nothing happens. So I stooped the pool. I am assuming the motor/pump needs replacement.

Can anybody please advise on:?

1. Should I replace only the motor or the whole thing (the pump and the motor)?
2. it’s an AO Smith 1.5 HP motor and Hayward Super II pump. Can I get the exact models (it's an old pool though!)? If not then which model do you suggest and also that will need some extra plumbing work, right?

It could be the capacitor. If it hums but doesn't start and you can turn the shaft by hand, it's probably the capacitor.

Thanks Dave for your quick answer. I will look into the capacitor. Can you please advise my questions (#1 and # 2 above) in case I need to replace the pump?

If it is the motor I would go with replacing it with a 2-speed motor. That way there's no plumbing to change and it will save a good bit of electricity cost.

Thanks again Dave. Any recommended brand for the 2 speed motor? Also in that case do I only change the motor or the motor + pump?

Just change the motor. The brand really doesn't matter, just match the frame, voltage, hp & service factor to the high speed.

If you post the model number of the motor (and also the pump if you can find it), we can give you some suggestions.

I don't have the p/n handy. However this is an AO Smith 1.5 HP Circular fleng motor and Hayward Super II pump. Does this help? Thank you.

It does if you know if the 1.5 hp is full-rated or up-rated. Do you know?

I don't know that. What is full rated or uprated?

That is a 1 hp full-rated motor. Do you know if it has 115 or 230 volts supplied to it?
