I am a recent reader and a new poster to the forum. I am here, I would guess as most other people are, because we are in the process of building a new pool.
We are in Southern Ca and are putting in a new in ground pool. While my better half and the architect are doing the design elements I get to pick out the toys (i.e. HW) to make it all work.
Of course that would require me to know something about pool HW
I stopped by at the local Leslie's and they showed me all the cool Hayward stuff. I did a good bit of research and found the options I liked - most importantly the network module (more on this later).
I've had a couple of builders by and while each has had good ideas they have all discounted the Hayward equipment as being inferior. Instead they are recommending Pentair or Jandy. Now I am not married to the Hayward equipment by any means but are they really that bad/inferior in terms of quality/support/warranty? This is a very big investment so I want to be sure.
And if Hayward is worse would I go wrong by taking Pentair over Jandy? The reason I prefer the Pentair system over Jandy is the network module. If I understand it correctly the Jandy module requires me to signup for a "free" account on their site. I assume this is to take out the config headaches for owners and builders in terms of routers, protocols, opening ports, security, etc. My problem is I HATE being tied into a proprietary system where Jandy could start charging for access, discontinue service, require HW upgrades, etc. This is also the reason I won't buy a Nest AC controller or get the Honeywell security system (I got an Elk system with a network module - cost more but no third party service or service fees - all managed within my internal LAN).
From what I have read the Hayward system simply provides a web interface through their module on your LAN. I think the Pentaire system also works the same way but I can not confirm. So any advice you guys can give me would be great - specially in regards to the modules and how they operate (i.e. can I directly access them, can I open/forward a port on my router so I can access them from outside my LAN, etc..).
Once I have settled the brand issue I am sure I will have tons of questions on equipment/panels/etc. Thanks in advance for any help.
