Equipment plumbing

Question regarding plumbing for next year.

Equipment is only a few feet from pool and current setup has flex hose connecting skimmer to pump to filter to return.

I’d like to introduce shutoffs and possibly unions as these components seem to have value for experienced pool owners.

With that said, what would be a recommended order of installation?

Skimmer to union to shutoff valve to pump to etc… Should I replace the flex with PVC (if so, why?)

Any other suggestions and links to visual aids would be appreciated, as well as existing TFP threads on this matter.

I would suggest a union on either side of the pump.....makes removal a snap.

I am not a fan of flex so would always choose rigid pvc whenever possible.

Do you have a multiport valve on your filter?

The multi-port is a good thing. Gives some additional control.

I have to defer to others who have used flex (will flex support unions?) but if you go with pvc, I would start with the skimmer to pump connection and work my way around following the path of the water.

A pic of your current setup will be very helpful in suggesting what makes the most sense as far as valves.
