I have been looking at replacing my pump and just had a question about the variable speed pumps.Looking at the performance curves it seems to me that if you have more than about 20 or so feet of head,the low speeds are pretty much useless,am I looking at that wrong?

Yes, you are looking at it wrong. Your head pressure will not be the same on low as it is on high...it will be much lower. On my setup on high I have a ~47 ft of head and on low it is ~10 ft of head.
