How long should I be letting the pool run?

How many hours a day should I be letting the pool filter run for? Since I opened my pool for the first time I've been running it 24/7 but hydro rates are high during the day. Any help would be great.

Thanks for the help, this might be a stupid question but does the heater have to be off when the pool is not running. It's a Rheem gas or do I just lower the heater temperature?

The heater should definitely be off when the pump isn't running. It has safety devices in it to insure it shuts down when there's no flow through it and if it's on a timer, the timer should have a firemans switch too.
