Polaris 280 back up valve installation direction

The original backup valve collar broken and we bought a new back up valve. but after the installation, the cleaner didn't work and always float in the water. So I'm wondering if we install the valve in the wrong direction -

There is an arrow on the "pointing" side of the valve, and this side should be close to the cleaner, correct? if we install the other way round, will it damage the cleaner?

I don't think a backup valve can cause the cleaner to float...I'm not an expert on these things, but it sounds like there's some air caught in it somewhere.
