What should a person look for when looking to purchase an in ground pool cover to be prepared for closing my pool?

There isn't much difference other than solid or mesh. You need a cover pump with a solid cover.
Just don't use anything to hold them in place that you don't want in your pool, and make sure the pool area is secured so no animals or children can get in.
Floating covers are almost disposable with fairly short lives. Most people greatly prefer safety covers if they can afford them.
