New pool owner. Went to pool store and here are my results.

New 1st time owner of a 18' AGP with vinyl liner. 8300 gallons of water. DE filter and 1.0 HP pump. Went to the pool store because my TF-100 test kit isn't here yet. Here are my results
FAC - 0
TAC - 0
CYA - 0
TA - 40
PH - 7.8
COPPER - 0
IRON - 0
TDS - 150
PHO - 100

They told me to use 6 lbs 12 oz of Alkalinity Up and to chlorinate and also add 2lbs 10 oz of Instant Pool Water Conditioner to raise my CYA. I did buy both Alkalinity Up and the pool water conditioner but now that I'm reading up on the pool school I see I can use baking soda instead to raise my TA levels. Should I return the Alkalinity Up and just use the baking soda? Also do you think I should do anything else? What should I raise my chlorine level to? Thanks for the help I'm very new. Read the pool school and I think I understand but I still feel a little lost.

Welcome to TFP!

Yep, you don't need the alkalinity up, cheap stuff will be fine.
Raise your FC to about 3 for now. Get familiar with http://poolcalculator.com. I'm going to develop a quick reference guide for it, but for now make sure you fill in the bottom yellow box with the following: troublefreepool.com, vinyl, bleach

What did you get to chlorinate with?

You will need that conditioner.

Re: New pool owner. Went to pool store and here are my resul

Nothing wrong with it at all. I just wanted to see if you had something else you already bought you could use for now.

For now, you need 2.5 quarts of bleach.
Is your CYA liquid or solid? Sounds like liquid. If so, add a quart for now.
Add 3 lbs of baking soda for now. I don't want to get TA up too high at first.

You'll probably need another cup or so of bleach in the morning.

Re: New pool owner. Went to pool store and here are my resul

Ok so I just punch my numbers in the pool calculator and add whatever amount of baking soda it says and enough bleach to get me to 3 correct? Then add the conditioner. Or should I be doing this in a certain order and time?

Re: New pool owner. Went to pool store and here are my resul

Thanks so much Robbie. Yes it is liquid. Add everything in that order and another cup of bleach in the morning? Can I add everything one after the other or wait awhile between each. Also do I add them right to the pool or in the skimmer?

Re: New pool owner. Went to pool store and here are my resul

Just need to vacuum it out now. I think the water looks great though.

Re: New pool owner. Went to pool store and here are my resul

Yes they definitely are. Now to keep it that way. :) Thanks for the help. I do have a question though. We are going away for the weekend and I have no one to add chlorine. Should I hook up the chlorine feeder and put pucks in while we're gone or do you think the pool will be ok for a few days. We're be gone for 3 days.

Re: New pool owner. Went to pool store and here are my resul

What is your CYA? If it is still on the low side, then using some pucks would be fine.

Alternatively you could likely raise the FC up to shock level and put a cover on the pool and you should be fine for 3 days. If you do not have a cover, then the pucks are your best option ... may want to also elevate the FC with bleach before you leave as well.

Re: New pool owner. Went to pool store and here are my resul

I used a float for 8 days while we were at Disneyland. If you can afford the CYA, it is an easy solution. If you can let your CYA get high and lower it when you get back... that's another option.

Three days is not likely to add too much CYA. I did need to play with the disposable dichlor floater I bought to get the correct amount of FC each day. The 10K "setting" on the float made about 1 FC per day an that was not enough to cover my solar loses. I had to cut all the nubs off to get to the 40K gallon setting and it made about 4FC per day in my 10K pool.

Another option is to make three bottles of pre-measured amounts of bleach for the person feeding your dog/checking your mail to pour into the pool with the pump running.

Whatever you choose to do, run the pool up to a shock level foryour CYA before you leave and it will drift back down. A cover will help keep your FC.

I would rather come home to clean water with a high FC than a green problem.

Re: New pool owner. Went to pool store and here are my resul

Well I attempted to do the CYA reading on my own with the cheapo walmart kit since my dang TF100 still isn't here. That kit said 45ish. We don't have a cover but I do have someone feeding my dog so if I just average over today and tomorrow how much bleach I usually use at night my mom can probably add it for me. That's if she remembers. Can I just dump a Crud load of bleach in on Friday before we leave? We'll be home Sunday night so it's really only 2 days we'll be gone or should I just hook up the chlorine feeder and use pucks?

Re: New pool owner. Went to pool store and here are my resul

Since it's really a short trip, I say bring your FC up to a solid shock level for CYA 45 (say 20FC) and let it drift for the weekend.
