leg - pier help

Ugh. I need help.
.
I'm cutting through the foam and tarps and digging down for the pavers for the legs for my pool. . The digging is totally wiping me out. There has to be a better way. All I have to work with is my hammer that has a straight-ish claw and a a little hand garden shovel. I'm digging through clay, and it's taking me about an hour per pier.

There has to be a better way!

Can anyone tell me what tools, etc you used?

A drain spade, also called a sharpshooter.

I looked that up, and I'm not sure that would have helped much.

I ended up using a demolition hammer.
