I moved into a home last year, never owned a pool and used a pool service. This year, I want to try to maintain it on my own. What type of cleaner do you recommend? A friend mentioned the Dolphin at Leslies because it runs on electricity and does not use your pool pump. Your thoughts?

Many people have problems with robotic cleaners. I think this is MOSTLY a customer service issue. Most of these are made in Israel, and they are very similar. Rather than Leslie's, I'd go with Costco as they have a very liberal return policy.
Dolphins have the most reported problems I've seen, but that may be only because they sell the most. Just not sure.
