I saw a cartridge filter that was only 3 weeks old and it had split in several places @ both ends after usage. Why? Dropped before install....faulty ???

What pump was used in the system? Although likely there must have been some damage/flaw to split.

What details can you provide? What actually split, the cartridge or the housing? A picture would help.
Some possibilities:
1) Excessive flow rate or pressure.
2) Trying to clean very dirty water.
3) Mis-plumbed filter resulting in reverse flow.
4) Damaged parts being used.
