Jacuzzi Lazer Sand Filter Issues

This pool came with home I bought. I have hooked everything up as it should be. Issues are as listed below...

Backwash has water that comes out in a steady light flow and sometimes more as more water is in pool
After plugging backwash, I try to run the system, but the water is not going through the system (Return to pool only ejects water for about 3 seconds, then nothing at all)
I know the gasket, is bad, but will that also keep the system from actually circulating the water

What could be my issue with the system?

Yes, it sounds like you need to replace the spider gasket.

As to why water is not coming back to the pool, are you sure the multivalve is set to filter? What does it do when you set it to bypass (or whirlpool I think)? When set to backwash, does it (with backwashed unplugge)?
