Opening pool for the season/pumping water from cover, etc. Water is gushing out of the heater. It's a Hayward. This has never happened before...help!

We will need a little more info...
Is the piping hooked up to the heater both inlet and outlet?
Was the unit properly winterized to prevent freezing?

Gushing out where? Perhaps someone omitted an O-ring on a coupling, or forgot to reinstall the drain plug?

Do you have an exact model number?
If its an H200/250/400 series, there are two plugs on the manifold that need to be replaced before you open up the plumbing.

Okay identified the problem. Took off side panel. There are 4 copper(?) u-shaped pipes. One of them has burst during the winter and has a 3/4" tear in it. Now what to do?? Is this repairable or is it a goner? I can't figure out how to post a picture or I would.

A 3/4" tear is too big to just blob up with solder. A new heat exchanger probably costs the same as a whole new heater.

3/4" sounds pretty big. I did fix one like that a few years back. Told the owner "no guarantees". Still holding as far as I know.
I would suggest, if you can get it out, to take it to a radiator repair shop and see what they say.

Id fire the pool guy.......try to blow system out with a air compressor this fall when u close that baby......be careful with it though
