For years when adding CYA to the pool I have always added it to the skimmer. Usually in 5 pound bags. It always stayed in the skimmer for a while and then dissolved. I was always told not to back wash for at least a week. While reading some of the posts on this site I read a neat trick of putting the CYA into a sock and putting it in the skimmer basket. I like this idea because it seems a little cleaner and CYA doesn't spill into the pool and doesn't clog up the skimmer.

Actually we usually recommend hanging the sock in front of the return jet in the pool ... then there are no concerns about backwashing.
You do not want to just set it in the pool as it is still acidic and could damage the surface.

Hanging it in front of the pool return was going to be my next question....thank you for the prompt replies.
