I used citric acid for my stains. Worked great. I found it in a local market for $2.99/lb. It may also be labeled as Lemon Salt. You might need to use more than ascorbic, but it's much cheaper.

You tend to need twice as much citric acid as ascorbic acid. That makes the citric acid effectively $6/lb which is more than the $5/lb for ascorbic acid listed in the web site linked to in first post. Of course it should be possible to find citric acid for less than $3/lb.

I just got some more, another 5 pounds from capnutra. This stuff is really spiking on ebay. Most are now $60 for 5 lbs, and this is $25!
