Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and newish to pool ownership.
We have just retired to France and have a house with a good sized pool. Last winter a good intentioned friend gave us some advice about closing the pool for the winter. We were advised that we didnt need to add anything, just close it up.
This seemed contrary advice to everything we had been told by the previous owners, but as our 'friend' had owned a pool for a few years we took his advice. Big mistake. we opened the pool up ten days ago and guess what ??? Pea soup.
I could have cried, but a good strong northern lass (brits who use this forum will know what I mean) I rolled up my proverbial sleaves and set to work with my home chemistry set.
I am pleased to report I have now got water coloured soup, and am a lot of Euros lighter of wallet.
The water is still cloudy, but getting clearer by the day. I can actually see the bottom now!!
The problem now seems to be my levels. Strange that, considering how little I know and how many chemicals I threw in (sarcasm abounds at this point).
My PH is about right I think it is just a bit light maybe 7.1, but my chlorine level is off the scale with almost orange water. I have used a lot of shock, but non of the stabilising blocks so I dont think the water has too much Cyanamic acid in.
Is this going to get lower or do I need to think about getting rid of some water?? I hope I havent bored you guys to death and someone will take pity on this poor (very poor now) ignorant lady.
