filter tear

How would I know if there is a tear in my filter - Hayward filter - IG - 10,000 gals

When I put fresh DE in I see some shoot back into the pool via the water return and the pool store is telling me this might be a possibility.

Do you know what model filter you have?

When was the last time you dismantled and cleaned the filter?

Since it's sending DE back to the pool I suspect an issue with it. It could be tears or a seal.

I just bought this house and I was told the pool is 40 years old. I haven't opened the filter yet - so it hasn't had any maintenance. I don't see a model # on the filter - only vari-flo valve is on the control dial
