I was reading the article on the front page regarding adding DE to a sand filter. It seems fairly simplistic to accomplish, and seems to be beneficial. Am I missing something? Is there any reason to consider not adding DE to my sand filter per the tutorial on the front page? Does it cause the filter to require more maintenance or anything?

Slight added expense for the DE, but it is more work if you do it all the time. The De will trap a lot more, so your pressure will go up quickly. You'll backwash more often, but every time you backwash you lose the DE, so you'll have to start the process again.
But even the added backwashing in teh begining is somewhat temporary. As you get the pool cleaner from using DE in the sand filter, the backwashing will get less and less and will get almost back to the place you were when you weren't using DE. Also unlike a real DE filter you can decide when to use it and when not to.
