I've noticed a little sand on the ground where I've backwashed (I've been back washing a lot). I also noticed some sand in my Polaris collection bag and a little in my skimmer baskets. Is this telling me something about my sand filter possibly? I have never changed my sand or added sand to my filter.

A little sand while backwashing is nothing to worry about. But sand getting into the pool suggests that there is something wrong inside the filter, most likely a cracked lateral.

I've only noticed the sand once in the skimmer and the Polaris bag. They both had them the same day. It hasn't seemed to happen again. I'll keep a check on it. Is a lateral an easy fix?

Replacing a lateral is a fair bit of work because you need to take all of the sand out of the filter to be able to get at them.
If it only happened once the filter is probably fine. A cracked lateral will leak some sand continuously.

Ok...gotta ask. What cracks a lateral if it is sitting there packed in sand and water. Freezing is the only thing I can come up with.
They are under a fair bit of pressure. As the plastic ages it gets more brittle and occasionally they crack. It is also fairly easy to break them if you move the filter with sand in it or aren't careful enough when removing sand.
