Will fixing leak put DE back in the pool?

I have a couple small leaks which i need to address. One is on the return line where the pool company has a plug installed. They use these for winterizing. They are mainly annoying if you ask me. The other is on the multi-port- see picture.

My question is: Will breaking the return line open (fixing plug leak and fitting on multiport) spill DE from the filter back into the pool? Also will it be ok to use pipe dope on the pvc plug that is in the return line?

As long as you put the main valve into circulate (instead of filter) before starting, and don't remove the main valve from the filter, it shouldn't be possible for any DE to get out of the filter.
