To Cover Or Not to Cover

Hello! I am new to this site, so if I have posted this in the wrong section in error, I apologize.

I have a very dark blue vinyl cover. It is not solar. I was wondering if it is better to leave the cover on, or take it off and let the sun hit the water directly to best raise the temperature. I would like to get a solar cover eventually, but until then, what works best? It is sunny and a warm 83 today :lol: . Also, when the time comes to get an above ground cover for my pool, is there a certain type that anyone would suggest? Thanks all!

Your 'solid" cover does not allow any light--"sunshine"-- to hit the water. All you're warming up is the cover I think!

If youre using the cover to heat the water I'd have to agree with woodyp. You wont get much heat transfer to the water. However covers are great for keeping the pool clean and maximizing usage of your chemicals.

Best heating/retention would be to have cover off in the sun and on at night.
