In ground spa question

Our recently purchased house has an in ground pool and spa. The spa operates when the suction and return are diverted to it, obviously, but I wonder if its okay to partially open the return in order to decrease the power of the jets while using the spa? Is it hard on the pump?

No it isn't hard on the pump but it will drain the spa unless you have the suction partially diverted as well. Plus if you have heated water, you will lose that too.

The size of the eyeball is not going to make much of a difference but the size of the venturi jet nozzle will make a big difference.
