We are new to the pool closing. We need to know in an area that freezes at night only typically, should we close the pool or keep the pump and filter running t all times? We are confused because pool guys have said different things. We have the gizmo in pool skimmer, lowered water below skimmer, and run the pump only when just above freezing. We have a freeze guard on pump that starts pump if temp is below 38. Is this right or should we just fill it back up and let the pool.run through the winter without lowering the water at all.

If you are going to run the pump then you need to keep the water up to normal levels and maintain the water balance just like during the regular pool season. You don't say if you have a main drain, but if you don't and the skimmer is plugged you will damage the pump by continuing to allow it to run while dry.

Closing it or keeping it open is a personal preference. If you're not going to cover it and you're going to run the pump anyway, you should just fill it back up and maintain it normally. Unless you blew out the skimmer line, the gizmo isn't doing any good for the line freezing. I don't know where you live so I don't know how deep the frost line is there, so that may not be an issue.
