Water Level for Auto pool cover

I have an auyomatic pool cover that lays on the water. We ha it installed this year. When they left the water level was just bellow the skimmer. They said to add a couple inches of water. Well that put it to where water came into the skimmer. Should I lower it below the skimmer or leave it for the safety of the cover?

If the water is below the skimmer the pump will not get water so you need to keep the water level half way up the skimmer opening with or without a cover or you will burn up the seal in the pump and cause the pump to leak

I am worried about water freezing in the skimmer and damaging the skimmer. The pool is closed
