new kind of filter?

The best filtration is your DE filter.
You can certainly augment it with a DudaDeisel bag, they seem to be the cheapest alternative to a "Slime Bag". They go down to 1 micron and from what I have read, they can even catch things that DE misses.

You could even use this to direct your backwash or vacuum to waste water back into your pool, as it'll pull everything out of it, more than your filter will. Saving you on water & chemical waste. A win win! Cleans up in the washing machine after hosing it out.

Of course, if you really want to trick out your DE filter, you could flush out all that DE, acid wash the grids then replace it with Cellulose Fiber Media. Super awesome and filters a little finer than DE does, uses less, weighs less and cleans off the grids better when bumping. If you don't have a bump DE filter, then when you backwash it, you just add more cellulose as you lose a lot more than with DE, roughly 95% or so when backwashing. So your grids stay cleaner of spent media, starting fresh each time and much much less overall maintenance. Not to mention cities don't whine about it and you don't need a collection tank for backwashing.

DE goes down to about 5-6 microns and cellulose goes down to 1-2 microns.

Denim just doesn't have enough layers and tight enough weave to it, compared to cartridge filter media. Hosiery would get you farther I would think.
